HafenCity is Hamburg, Germany’s newest metro station where trains arrive to an LED light show of changing colors and the sound of Verdi operas.
The Old Elbe Tunnel was a technical sensation in 1911 when it opened. It is still in operation and has become a nostalgic piece of Hamburg history. A pedestrian and vehicle tunnel under the river Elbe, it is 80 feet below the surface, 1,398 feet long, and connects central Hamburg with the docks and shipyards. It was the first river tunnel on the European continent and has been designated a protected monument in 2003.
